Once Upon a Prom

The prom committee is proud to present "Once Upon a Prom" on Saturday, May 4th! Tickets are $40 and are on sale during lunches this week and next week, with the exception of Friday, May 3rd. TICKETS WILL NOT BE SOLD ON FRIDAY, MAY 3RD OR AT THE DOOR. Tickets must be paid for in cash or a check made out to Gorham High School. Prom is at Dunegrass Golf Club in Old Orchard Beach from 7-10 p.m. If you are bringing a guest from outside of Gorham High School, the appropriate paperwork must be filled out and approved by GHS administration prior to purchasing tickets. Big Brothers / Big Sisters
Are you looking for ways to get community service hours? Do you enjoy working with elementary age students? If so, please consider being a volunteer with the Big Brother/Big Sister program. This program matches Gorham High School students with elementary age students in our Gorham elementary schools. You would meet with your "match" at the elementary school where you can do activities such as play on the playground or play board games etc. The Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization would train you before you began and they ask you commit to at least one hour a week. If you are interested, reach out to Ms. Stevens in the guidance office for more information.

Student Services 

Health Career Explorations Camp
Every year, UNE hosts a free health career explorations camp for high school students to participate in hands-on activities to learn about various careers in health care. In addition, they learn about the college admissions process. The camp will take place June 22nd – 24th. This camp is an overnight camp, designed to replicate some of the college experience. As such, students will stay in dorms on the University's Biddeford Campus and will receive meals at the campus dining hall. Students who live locally have the option of attending the day camp activities only. Camp coordinators and chaperones will stay with the students while the camp is in session. The University will provide transportation between the Portland and Biddeford campuses during the camp. This camp is FREE! During the camp, students will participate in fun hands-on activities while learning about careers in: Dental Medicine, Dental Hygiene, Nursing, Occupation Therapy, Osteopathic Medicine, Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant, Nutrition and more. Mental Health Champion ScholarshipCommunity Action for Mental Health in partnership with the Wareham Family will award a Mental Health Champion Scholarship in the amount of $2,000 to a senior pursuing a degree or career related to mental health, such as psychology, counseling, psychiatry, or social work, or to someone who exhibits a genuine passion for mental health advocacy, awareness, or research. This could be through relevant coursework, extracurricular activities, or personal experiences. Candidates will have demonstrated leadership qualities and/or demonstrated initiative in promoting mental health and well-being during their high school career. Applicants must demonstrate a strong academic record, with a minimum GPA of 85. Applicants are asked to submit a brief essay or personal statement between 500-1000 words explaining their interest and passion for emotional and mental well-being. You may include letters of recommendation from teachers, mentors, or professionals who can attest to your commitment to mental health (this is encouraged but not required). High School staff may submit an application on behalf of a student they feel is deserving of this scholarship (please provide a statement about why you feel this student is deserving of this scholarship). Community Action for Mental Health encourages applications from a diverse range of candidates, promoting diversity and inclusivity within the mental health field. In order to apply for the scholarship, please submit the 500-1000 word essay and any letters of recommendation with your name, preferred contact information, and GPA, via email, to Contactus@Communityaction4mh.org - the deadline to apply is Friday May 3rd, 2024. The board of Community Action for Mental Health (CAMH) will review all applicants and narrow to two finalists who will be reviewed with the Wareham family, and in partnership with the CAMH board, a final decision will be made. The scholarship will be awarded at Senior Scholarship Night on Wednesday, May 29th at 6 pm.
 
Chewonki Opportunity

Thanks to generous grant funding provided by the American Rescue Plan Act, the Maine Department of Education, and the Maine Outdoor Learning Initiative, Chewonki is now able to offer amazing two-week summer learning programs for 50 Maine students at no cost to participating families. 100% of all expenses, including clothing, equipment, food, and transportation will be covered by the grant funding which is amazing! Saint Joseph's College of Maine

Saint Joseph's College of Maine is offering an exciting (free!) opportunity for students and clubs to join them on Friday, May 3rd, 2024 for their first mock business challenge, "Is a Business Major for Me?" This is an opportunity for schools to come together, virtual or in-person, to investigate and test what it takes to become a business professional. NEACAC College Fair

The University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) Admissions is hosting a NEACAC College Fair on Thursday, May 16th, 2024 from 9 am to 11 am at the Augusta Civic Center. University Credit Union Scholarship

This is the ninth year of the University Credit Union Scholarship! They will award eight, $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors entering their first year of college in 2024! Scholarships will be awarded to one student at each of the following schools: UMO, UMA, UMF, UMFK, UMM, UMPI, USM,& Maine Maritime Academy. Applicants must complete all required information on the online UCU application which can be found at www.ucumaine.com/scholarship/ and please be sure to include primary UCU membership. No essays required. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Criteria for Selection: All applications will be sent to the Scholarship Committee after the application deadline. The committee will review all submissions for eligibility and requirements to determine entry into the drawing. Scholarship awardees will be randomly drawn from the pool of approved eligible applications for each of the eight awards. (Transcript is not required for this scholarship application). Scholarship awardees will be notified by June 1, 2024. Awardees will be asked to submit a photo for publication in our membership newsletter and press release. UCU reserves the right to discontinue this scholarship program anytime without notice. UCU reserves the right not to award any scholarships should there be no qualified applicants. Maine Medical Center Junior Volunteer Program

Maine Medical Center is excited to announce that the Maine Medical Center Junior Volunteer program is now year-round! Applications will be accepted and processed on a rolling basis. Volunteers ages 14-17 may choose between volunteering during the summer or year-round. Junior Volunteers will participate in the same training as their adult volunteers and will have more choices regarding their assignment. This change will also allow for more flexibility in scheduling. Junior Volunteers will require parental consent to volunteer. High School students that are 18+ will be processed as adult volunteers. Interested students can apply for the Junior Volunteer program through their online application process, which mirrors the application process for adult volunteers. Upon submission of your application, you will be provided with further instructions on the next steps, which include: 1. Completion of an immunization form by your healthcare provider, which must be submitted to their employee health department for review and clearance. 2. Attendance at an orientation session, which may be conducted in person or virtually. 3. Issuance of a volunteer badge and setup for volunteering within their facility. Volunteers participating in the program have the flexibility to fulfill their hours during the summer months only or throughout the year.
